Odyssey Scholars Present Research Projects

October 25th, 2022

Juniors in Sandia Prep's Odyssey Scholars Program recently presented their research projects to their parents and other guests at an evening reception in the Pitchfork Café. The junior Scholars are: Mila Lensi '24, Savannah Lawrence '24, Ava Garcia-Wesley '24, CJ Khalsa '24, Avery Kestner '24, Ashley Rose '24, and David Cao '24. Seniors in their second year of the program are: Hiilani Alderete '23, Mariam Assed '23, Rowan McJimsey '23, Sofia Chalamidas '23, Tatiana Dalton '23, and Mya Lathon '23.

Students are pursuing their passions for entrepreneurship, music, art, filmmaking, animal rights, and more. Their projects include researching immigrants’ access to healthcare in the United States; cyberbullying and social media’s influence on teenage girls with eating disorders; designing and implementing an outreach program on writing; examining the impact of film scores and soundtracks in the movie industry; and others.

You can read more about their projects here.

As with Homer's Odysseus, our Odyssey Scholars set out on an epic journey of learning and discovery. After choosing an area of study they are passionate about, the Scholars design a two-year research program that combines elements of independent study, academic inquiry, and scholarly analysis. Working with the program director, they challenge themselves academically, intellectually, and creatively as they sharpen their skills in critical thinking, research competency, scholarly writing, and public speaking. The Odyssey Scholars program—engaging, challenging, and fun—culminates in a major public presentation at the end of students' senior year.

Students may apply for the program at the end of their sophomore year.
