SummerPrep Launches Counselor-in-Training Program

March 13th, 2024

Sandia Prep’s SummerPrep has launched a new Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program, which provides rising eighth- through rising tenth-grade campers the opportunity to continue their journey at SummerPrep while developing professional life skills to prepare them for workplace and camp counseling positions.

CITs gain leadership experience, a sense of belonging within the SummerPrep community, and the opportunity to fail, reflect, and grow.

CITs will have time to reflect on their interactions and experiences and debrief after planning and implementing SummerPrep activities. CITs complete the program having developed new job skills, confidence in their leadership ability, and general life readiness.

The course instructor will be Alex Darling, Prep’s Assistant Director of Admission and a Track and Mountain Biking coach. Her previous experience includes leading the American Indian College Fund Ambassador Leadership Program.

“I enjoy working with students helping them prepare for the future in fun and challenging ways,” Darling said. “I’m excited to coordinate a SummerPrep program that builds camper leadership and confidence as they prepare for their first jobs.”

The program runs 8:30 – 3:30 p.m. June 3-14. Learn more here.

In the mornings, CITs will focus on teamwork and leadership skills: How to build a growth mindset, positive camper management, goal setting, effective communication methods, and job skills, including applying and interviewing for a job.

In the afternoons, they will rotate through the following areas of SummerPrep: Sports, Early Childhood, Arts, Specialty Programs, and Camp Operations. They will shadow and help mentor campers as they design and create projects.

Daily CIT debrief meetings will provide opportunities for written and verbal reflection.

The new CIT program is among SummerPrep’s many new and expanded offerings. Classes are filling quickly. View our catalog of classes by category to dream up a summer of creativity, friendship, and fun.
