Border Doors Exhibit Garners Attention
October 31st, 2024
The Puertas fronterizas/Border Doors exhibit of Sandia Prep students’ work at the Albuquerque Museum is attracting widespread acclaim and generating significant interest and media coverage.
The Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico Press, KRQE, and Telemundo Nuevo Mexico have all done stories on the exhibit. You can see them here:
Here's a link to information on the exhibit from the Albuquerque Museum website.
The exhibit will be the focus of the museum’s Third Thursday community event on Thursday, November 21, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Curator Alicia Romero, Sandia Prep Modern Language Department Spanish teacher Claudio Pérez, and Prep alumni Carlos Pérez '19, Julia Silva '23, and Ava Garcia-Wesley '24 will be on hand to discuss the project.
In addition, there will be performances by Ballet Folklórico Fiesta Mexicana and Albuquerque High Mariachi Band.
The event is free and open to the community.
Here’s the schedule:
- 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.: Students in the Border Doors exhibition (Gallery 6)
- 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.: Mini Doors art activity with student assistants (Lobby)
- 6:00 - 6:30 p.m.: Introductory Conversation with curator Alicia Romero and Claudio Perez (Ventana)
- 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.: Student Folklorico and Mariachi Performances (Ventana)
- 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.: Yoga in Gallery 5
- 7:00- 7:30 p.m.: Students in Border Doors exhibition (Gallery 6)
Since 2014, Pérez has taken his advanced Spanish-language students to El Paso, Texas, where they utilize their Spanish skills to interact first-hand with immigrants and advocates at the Cristo Rey Border Immersion Program.
Puertas fronterizas/Border Doors is an exhibition of student work done between 2019 and 2024 that contemplates the symbolic door -- unlike a physical border wall or fence -- as it relates to the immigrant experience.
The museum is located at 2000 Mountain Rd. NW. The exhibit will run to May 4, 2025.
