Claudio Pรฉrez, Spanish teacher at Sandia Prep, has taken his advanced Spanish students to El Paso, Texas, where they use their language skills to engage with immigrants and advocates through the Cristo Rey Border Immersion Program. "Puertas Fronterizas / Border Doors" is a student exhibition from 2019 to 2024 that reflects on the symbolic significance of doors โ in contrast to physical borders like walls or fences โ as they relate to the immigrant experience. The exhibition will be on view at the Albuquerque Museum from October 5, 2024, to May 4, 2025.
Prep's Biology 1 students dove into hands-on learning during their macromolecules lab, testing various foods for substances like proteins and lipids. Science in action!
The Outdoor Leadership Program took Prep eighth graders on a backpacking trip in Northern New Mexico! ๐ฒโฐ๏ธ They timed it perfectly with the fall colors and ideal weather. ๐โ๏ธ What an amazing experience for the students to share together! ๐โจ

Coach Matt Westerlund was honored by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association over the summer for his great achievements in coaching. Coach Westerlund was named the NM High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year in Girls Soccer for the entire state and all classes. This is a very prestigious honor and is very fitting for the program that Coach Westerlund has put together. Congratulations, Coach Westerlund!

Eighth grader Miles Vroman competed in the USA Track and Field (USATF) club season and qualified for the USATF Junior Olympics in College Station this July. He competed in the boys 13-14 pentathlon (100m hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump, 1500m) and placed 6th overall, earning him All American designation. During the competition, he set the national record for 13-14 year-old boys high jump completed during a pentathlon, with a jump of 1.75meters (5 feet, 8.75 inches). Congratulations, Miles!
Orientation Day! ๐ฆ๐ฆ Our incoming sixth graders met their teachers, walked campus, opened their lockers, and most importantly, discovered if they're lions or unicorns! ๐๐

Last week, fifth and sixth graders from various schools all over the state took part in a n a five-day-long SummerPrep excursion called "Young Trailblazers!" They rock climbed ๐งโโ๏ธ in Jemez, camped ๐๏ธ at the Bandelier National Monument, went white water rafting ๐ฃโโ๏ธ, swam ๐โโ๏ธ at Abiquiu Lake, and made lifelong memories! ๐
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Pete MacFarlane, a cherished member of our community.
Pete joined the Sandia Prep community in 1975 as a coach and became the Athletic Director a year later. He remained in that position until his retirement in 2017. He introduced the no-cut policy and supported numerous championships, believing in the power of athletics to teach essential life skills. Pete's positive mark on the school has been enormous, and his spirit of generosity and fun lives on in every practice and every game. He will be greatly missed.

Daredevil Design students ended the year with a visit from Physics students from Angelo State University. Sixth graders had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities that demonstrated the principles of pressure and friction!

๐ถ ๐๏ธ Students adventured on a week-long Lake Powell kayaking trip, immersing themselves in nature, learning about the ecological and geological diversity of the Lake Powell/Southern Utah region, and embracing the outdoor lifestyle. Additionally, our seventh graders went on a caving adventure at El Malpais, engaging in exploration, discovering cave ecology, and even visiting a wolf sanctuary! Geoscience students, accompanied by science faculty members, embarked on a geological exploration of the southern parks of New Mexico. They ventured into Oliver Lee Memorial State Park near Alamogordo, where they discovered fossils and evidence of volcanic sills. From the summit of the Capitan Reef, they observed the eclipse before delving into Carlsbad Caverns National Park to witness the formation of the caves. Finally, they visited White Sands National Park to discuss recent discoveries of 23,000 fossilized human footprints.

Geoscience teacher Helen Haskell journeyed to Yellowstone National Park with Ecology Project International during spring break! Joined by 10 other educators, they traveled the park learning about the wolf reintroduction program, helping with bison population research (including collecting scat samples), and doing basic snow science. In the DesignLab, Henry '12, Teija '12, and Dane '12, Entrepreneurial Through Design students, clinched first place in the third round of NMSU's Innoventure Challenge with their innovative concept: a comprehensive gray water recycling system for residential use. Additionally, they collaborated with Computer Science 2 students to craft a retro-style video game tailored for 10-12 year old gamers. Each team devised a beta version of their game along with a business model plan.

Geoscience-1 students test earthquake-resistant spaghetti buildings, tying into their math curriculum. Students debated and talked about the properties of triangles versus squares in terms of strength and structure! Geoscience-2 completed their cryosphere unit, studying ice cores helping us make more accurate predictions for the future. Way to go!

Recent heavy rains on the west coast have helped students in Geoscience-1 labs understand landslides better. They've been studying how different materials behave based on slopes, friction, and precipitation, connecting it to current and historic landslides worldwide. In Geoscience-2, students are diving into ocean properties and how ice affects ocean currents through hands-on experiments.
Check out these cool pics of clocks made by Prep students in Industrial Design class! They had to use scrap wood from their classroom. Mr. Touma says he's super impressed with how awesome and creative they are, especially since they whipped these up so quickly!
๐โ๏ธ Our Sandia Prep chess teams dominated at the Albuquerque Chess League tournament last month! ๐ It was the biggest City league tournament yet, and our middle schoolers took home 2nd place while our upper schoolers secured 5th. Next up: State Championships on February 22nd and 23rd.
โญ๏ธLast Thursday, The Helping Hands Community Service group returned to Roadrunner Food Bank to lend a hand. From bagging granola in the clean room to donating 250 pounds of food, we appreciate all their efforts! โญ๏ธ
