Prep's Girls Soccer Nabs Another State Championship

November 13th, 2023

Sandia Prep’s Varsity Girls Soccer team has triumphed once again, nabbing the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) State 1A-3A Soccer Championship.

The girls team beat district rival Bosque School 2-0 on November 10 at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex to win the title -- the seventh time in the last eight years.

Prep’s girls have hoisted a blue trophy every year since 2016, except for the pandemic-shortened season of spring 2021. They were unbeaten this year against competition in their division.

Juniors ruled the day, as forward Penny Hashagen ’25 scored the first goal, and forward Maya Burgos ’25 scored the second. Goalkeeper Taylor Calkins ’25  made two saves.

“The thing that has made this group so special for me is last year, we lost five seniors that had been with me since I started the program,” Sandia Prep Coach Matt Westerlund told the Albuquerque Journal. “We were looking for leaders out here, and having the juniors and seniors step up by example to show how we play, that was what I was most proud of.”

Prep’s Varsity Boys Soccer team was looking for its fourth straight state championship but unfortunately fell to the New Mexico Military Institute 4-2.

Congratulations to both of our talented teams on their incredible seasons!
