February 6th, 2025
Sandia Prep senior Camila Chavez ‘25 signed her letter of intent with Portland State University for Track and Field. The Portland State Vikings compete at the NCAA Division 1 level in the Big Sky Conference.
Camila has been an integral part of Prep’s track and cross country programs since her freshman year, according to Sandia Prep Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Kyle Ellis.
Primarily a hurdler, Camila showed her talent early placing fifth on the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles at state her freshman year. She also placed third in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles her sophomore year. Her junior season was cut short due to injury, but she posted some of the best times in the state in both events.
“In cross country, Camila was a very pleasant surprise, placing as high as 11th state in 3A, and helping her team to a second-place state finish,” Ellis said.
“Camila is a fierce competitor and has progressively run faster season after season, something I expect her to continue at the NCAA Division 1 level,” he added. “I don’t think we’ve seen Camila’s ceiling yet; the future is very bright for her. Her versatility, endurance, sportsmanship, and competitiveness make her an asset to any team. Always stepping up to run relays and working very hard to come back from injury are testaments to her character and work ethic.”
